At the Journey's End

Character  Goran Sætansen

Description

Goran, old and frail...in one of his last moments.
Of the three Sætansen siblings, he was the first one to come and the last one to go.
The exhausted survivor’s long Journey of Life had finally come to a peaceful end.

Moonsorrow: Matkan Lopussa - At the Journey's End
(Translated and slightly altered lyrics)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmrPo2…

O' my weighing mind
like all the earth.
My life fading
behind the moss.

In the shelter of these primal trees
forsaken I may lie.
The birds, they're gone,
leaves are my only company.

Once will the worldly curtain
fall before all Life.
O' hear me sing this one last song
echoing through the mountains.

Tears of my heart,
dewfall of my soul.
Let the wind carry
my cares afar.

Once will the worldly curtain
fall before all Life.
O' hear me sing this one last song
echoing through the mountains.

This quite quick painting was not planned at all..but I saw a photo of a tiger in this pose and it just struck me like lightning. I had actually started another similar drawing of him, but this mental image just didn't leave me....

I have become very close to Goran the last 1-2 years, even though I know him already as long as I know his little brother Stian. They came together in summer 2009. But he has always been the black shadow of his much younger white brother and I never really knew him well. For a long time he was just that careless nonchalant, oversexed punk guy who did nothing else than following his dick. But I learned that there is a lot more behind his Mohawk and lazy "yah, fuck me" attitude.

I learned that his soul is ancient. He has a wisdom and emotional stability that inspires me deeply. I realized why he had dedicated his life to stay at Stian's side, even through the hardest times. He has been the one bringing Stian back to reality when needed and if it was not for him, Stian's Fjordland Force wouldn't have had such great success. He has indirectly saved Stian's life more than once. Only one time...he couldn't...

I learned that -despite his nonchalant, seemingly careless appearance- he would join the Red Cross Rescue Corps if he could. He is the ancient tree that survives heavy storms and the stable rock that others can lean on. He had survived bullets and poison, loss and suffering and he always went on, never negative, never hateful, but always realistic. He was a stabilizing force for those who needed him the most, no matter how intimidating he appeared. Throughout his long life he had become wise and inspiring for all who followed in his' and Stian's tracks...
... and many siderians owe their lives to him.

But the Journey of his long and hard Life once came to an end. After more than 130 years (110 is normal for siderians) he felt it was time to go on his final journey, alone. To find his well deserved peace...to go back to his brother under the Northern Lights.
...and to become one of my closest spiritual guides....

More art of my dear punky fellow (I always link these because I still feel that he deserves more than only being Stian's shadow)

I don't know if I've told you, but I think of him every single time I sing Matkan Lopussa. It's one of the songs that I sing with the most emotion.... paradoxically the fact I don't directly understand the lyrics only amplifies the emotion, it makes it pure and unhindered by meanings and definitions. All the emotion when I sing is, comes from that, from thinking about him and this scene and what it represents spiritually. I envision his spirit sighing at the sky with his last breath.
